How to do the credit counseling "debtor education" courses with Consumer Credit Counseling Service
The new bankruptcy law (effective Obtober 2005) requires all debtors filing Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 to do two courses of debtor education credit counseling.
The first course MUST be done PRIOR to filing your case; for that reason, it is often referred to as the prefiling credit counseling. Although exigent circumstances do exist that excuse this requirement, in our jurisdiction it is virtually impossible to meet these, so count on having to do this class before filing.
The second required course must be completed within 45 days after your Creditors' Meeting, and is called a personal financial management course. It is a bit longer than the first class, and even includes a "pop-quiz".
HINT: If you are filing JOINTLY with your spouse, do the courses together and you'll only pay one fee each time.
